His Holiness Sri Swami Ramananda Paramahamsa was born in 1903 in Kannur District, Kerala. From an early age, he displayed a deep inclination toward spirituality and dedicated his life to the pursuit of divine realization. After years of extensive travel and spiritual seeking across India, he eventually settled at Dowleswaram in the East Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh.
At the sacred Janardhana Swami Temple in the Dhawalagiri Hills, Sri Swamiji performed intense penance and yogic austerities for several years in a cave surrounded by snakes. Because of this extraordinary tapas and his fearless communion with nature, devotees reverently came to know him as “Pamula Swamy” (The Saint among Serpents).
Having undergone decades of rigorous Yoga Sadhana under the guidance of his revered Guru, Sri Swami Sivananda Paramahamsa, Sri Swamiji dedicated himself to establishing and propagating the authentic Yoga tradition taught by his Guru. He firmly believed that this path was the very Yoga expounded by Lord Sri Krishna in the sacred Bhagavad Gita and affirmed by the ancient scriptures, Upanishads, and the teachings of the great Maharshis.
To substantiate this truth, Sri Swamiji undertook an exhaustive and profound study of the Upanishads and other sacred texts. Through deep spiritual insight and scriptural understanding, he demonstrated that the Yoga taught by his Guru was indeed the path of Self-Realization described in the Bhagavad Gita and the eternal Sanatana Dharma tradition.
In 1965, he established the Sri Ramananda Yoga Jnana Ashram at Kamannavalasa (via Ramabhadrapuram), Badangi Mandal, Vizianagaram District, Andhra Pradesh. The Ashram became a center for spiritual learning, Yoga practice, meditation, and the dissemination of timeless Vedic wisdom. He later founded another Ashram at Bhavanipuram, Vijayawada, further expanding his mission of guiding seekers on the path of spiritual awakening.
Revered as a Paramahamsa, Sri Swami Ramananda Paramahamsa was known for his immense spiritual power, compassion, and divine grace. Devotees and disciples attributed numerous extraordinary healings and transformative experiences to his blessings. Many sought his guidance for relief from chronic ailments and personal suffering, and countless devotees testified to experiencing profound spiritual solace, inner peace, and miraculous interventions through his grace.
Throughout his life, Sri Swamiji demonstrated boundless love and compassion toward the poor and underprivileged. He provided food, clothing, and support to those in need, treating all beings with equal affection and dignity. His life embodied the ideals of selfless service, humility, and universal love.
A strong advocate of disciplined spiritual practice, Sri Swamiji emphasized the importance of regular Yoga Sadhana for the welfare of all humanity. He particularly propagated a spiritual discipline known as Sada Pranayama, encouraging seekers to integrate yogic awareness into every aspect of daily life. Through his teachings, he inspired countless aspirants to pursue physical well-being, mental balance, and spiritual realization.
Sri Swamiji was also a prolific spiritual author who wrote several books to guide seekers on the path of Yoga and Self-Realization. Among his literary contributions, “Yogamrutham” stands as one of his final and most cherished works, encapsulating his profound spiritual wisdom and practical guidance for aspirants.
After a lifetime devoted to Yoga, wisdom, compassion, and service to humanity, His Holiness Sri Swami Ramananda Paramahamsa attained Mahasamadhi in 1993. His teachings, institutions, writings, and spiritual legacy continue to inspire devotees and seekers, illuminating the timeless path of truth, self-knowledge, and God-realization.
“Yoga is the path to Self-Realization, and through sincere Sadhana, every soul can experience the Divine within.”
