His Holiness Sri Swami Sivananda Paramahamsar (Holy Father)
His Holiness Sri Swami Sivananda Paramahamsar is revered as the Adi Guru of the Siddha Vidya tradition. Born as Sri Raman Nambiar in a devout vegetarian Kshatriya family in the sacred town of Vatakara (Badagara), Kerala, he displayed exceptional sincerity, discipline, and integrity from an early age. As a young man, he entered government service as a police officer.
A profound turning point transformed the course of his life. After receiving a letter from his wife requesting that he return home, he obtained leave and came back. Upon his arrival, she welcomed him with great reverence, washed his feet, and seated him with respect. Resting her head upon his lap, she peacefully departed from her mortal body. Deeply moved by this mysterious event, Sri Raman Nambiar began contemplating the nature of life and death. Determined to discover the ultimate truth behind existence, he renounced worldly life and embarked upon a spiritual quest.
During a pilgrimage to Palani, while performing Giri Pradakshina around the sacred hill of Lord Subrahmanya, two Siddha Yogis appeared to him near the Varattaru River and initiated him into the sacred knowledge of Siddha Vidya. Having imparted the initiation, they disappeared. Through this divine event, the Guru Parampara of Siddha Vidya commenced through Sri Swami Sivananda Paramahamsar.
Following the initiation, he entered deep Samadhi for an extended period. His body became covered by anthills and creeping vines. A British forest officer named Kalam discovered him in this extraordinary state while clearing the surrounding forest. Recognizing the saintly presence before him, he served Sri Swamiji with great devotion. Eventually, Sri Swamiji emerged from Samadhi and, for the welfare of humanity, resumed active spiritual work. He later initiated Kalam into Siddha Vidya.
Sri Swami Sivananda Paramahamsar travelled extensively throughout India and neighboring countries, including Singapore, Burma, Thailand, and Malaysia, spreading the teachings of Siddha Vidya. It is traditionally believed that he initiated hundreds of thousands of seekers into this path. He established Siddha Samaj at Vatakara as the principal center of the tradition, with additional centers at Kayanna, Iyyuru, Mannurkara, and Ammampalayam in Tamil Nadu.
His teachings emphasized the essential unity of all life. He taught that the same divine life-force (Jiva Shakti) exists in human beings, animals, birds, and all living creatures. According to his realization, true spirituality transcends distinctions of caste, creed, religion, nationality, and social status. He proclaimed that there is ultimately only one universal religion—Ishwara Matham, the path leading toward direct realization of the Divine.
Sri Swamiji taught that the mastery of life-force through Siddha Yoga is the key to spiritual awakening. He emphasized direct experience over intellectual debate and encouraged seekers to realize the truth within themselves through disciplined practice, devotion, and self-inquiry. His spiritual experiences and teachings are preserved in works such as Siddha Vedam, Moksha Soothram, and Life for World Peace.
Among his many disciples, Sri Swami Sivananda Paramahamsar bestowed special blessings upon His Holiness Sri Swami Ramananda Paramahamsa, whom he regarded as one of his foremost disciples and a principal torchbearer of the Siddha Vidya tradition. Through him, the teachings continued to spread and inspire spiritual aspirants.
Throughout his life, devotees witnessed many remarkable events associated with Sri Swamiji. However, he consistently advised seekers not to become attached to extraordinary powers or miracles, emphasizing that true spiritual attainment lies in Self-Realization and God-consciousness.
Sri Swamiji also taught the importance of Pranayama and spiritual discipline. Within the Siddha Vidya tradition, special emphasis is given to advanced yogic practices transmitted through the Guru-Shishya lineage and undertaken with proper guidance and dedication.
After a lifetime devoted to spiritual awakening and service to humanity, His Holiness Sri Swami Sivananda Paramahamsar attained Jeeva Samadhi on 21 June 1949 near the sacred town of Palani. His Samadhi was established at Vatakara, Kerala, where devotees continue to pay homage to this great Siddha Master.
His teachings continue to inspire seekers toward inner transformation, universal brotherhood, spiritual realization, and the direct experience of the Divine Presence within all beings.
“The same life-force shines in all beings. Realize that Truth within yourself and behold the unity of existence.”
